You can dramatically improve your chances of success by practicing for your interview on a platform like Voomer, where you can answer past and present questions in an environment that looks a lot like HireVue’s.

With Voomer, you’ll gain the confidence you need to cruise through the interview and you’ll also get AI-powered feedback on your answers so that you can quickly improve and get through this critical stage.

State Farm HireVue interview – what to expect

State Farms’s HireVue interview is sent out relatively early in the application process (usually a few days to a week). However, we’ve seen some cases where the HireVue invitations have taken over a month to hit an applicant’s inbox.  So don’t stress out if you submit an application and don’t instantly get invited for the HireVue.

When you finally get called up for a HireVue, you’ll get a link sent to your email. You can do the email on your phone or on a computer – as long as it has a webcam.  We recommend using a laptop since they usually have an integrated webcam and you’ll minimize camera shake.

After you click on the link for your HireVue interview, you’ll be shown a few introductory videos – which you can skip if you like.  When the actual interview starts, you will click a button to display the first question.  A countdown timer will appear which displays the amount of time you have to prepare your answer. Usually, this is about 30 seconds.

After the prep timer winds down to zero (or if you choose to click on a button that skips the prep timer ahead) HireVue will start recording. You’ll usually have about 2 minutes to answer before HireVue cuts you off.

State Farm’s HireVue is pretty lenient in the sense that you can re-record an answer if you didn’t like what you submitted. However, keep in mind you can only re-record once, so try and get things right the first time. Also, pay close attention to the instructions since the number of retries allowed might change at any time.

You’ll be asked 3 to 5 questions and after that, the interview is over.

Use the STAR method to guide your answers

The STAR method is a very powerful way to organize your answers. This will ensure that you keep track of how you should answer the questions and mid response, what you’ve answered so far.

State Farm HireVue interview specifics

Even if you’ve been through many interviews before and think you’ve “seen it all”, take a step back and think about how State Farm is going to evaluate you. One of the issues high on HR’s list of priorities is to find people that match State Farm’s values.

Make sure you learn about their values and try and answer all (or most) of the questions on your HireVue by weaving in State Farm’s values into your answer. That simple trick will make HR’s life so much easier and help you get to the next stage!

State Farm’s values are:

  1. Quality service and relationships
  2. Mutual trust
  3. Integrity
  4. Financial strength

Memorize those values (or have them on a post-it next to you during the HireVue interview) and use them to align your answers to State Farm’s expectations!

Johns Hopkins Carey MBA and Masters Kira Interview Question Bank

Introduction

Everything submitted. Application done. “Oh wait what?! There is some sort of video requirement?”. Yes, that’s right you’ve just remembered you have to complete a video interview (as Johns Hopkins Carey Business School calls it, or the “Kira interview” which is what everyone calls it!) as part of your application to proceed – and you definitely don’t want this derailing your application.

Johns Hopkins Carey Business School uses Kira interviews as part of their admissions process.

We’ve researched an extensive, but not exhaustive, set of possible questions to help with your preparation – and guess what! All these prompts are built into Voomer’s AI-powered video assessment tools.

Johns Hopkins Carey MBA and Masters Kira interview structure

John Hopkins Carey MBA and Masters admissions started using Kira interviews as part of their admissions process some years ago, and this academic year is no different.

Admissions wants applicants to have a chance to make their case in a more interesting medium such as video, since the essays and test scores can be very dry.

The way the Kira interview works is as follows:  A few weeks after you submit your application and you are successful in getting approved by the first stage of the admissions process, you will receive a video interview invitation by email.

After receiving the invitation, you will have a few days to complete the video interview – make sure you use that time to prepare with a platform like Voomer, don’t rush off and record your answers immediately.

The questions you’ll be asked in your Kira interview can be split into two main categories.

The first category will be behavioral questions, which will take a look at the competencies that Johns Hopkins Carey is interested in.  You’ve probably been asked one of those before, they usually start with “tell me about a time when…”.

We wrote a great article on how to tackle those here.

The second category will be questions that probe your motivation and drive.  For example, those questions will ask you about the reasons for deciding to apply for an MBA.

There is a third category, but it rarely shows up on Kira interviews, so we won’t go into too much depth in this article.  These are questions that probe technical knowledge in your field of expertise, what the latest innovations are, etc. Since those questions are highly context-dependent and Kira is a “one size fits all” solution, they rarely crop up.

Johns Hopkins Carey MBA and Masters Kira Interview Questions

  1. Why do you want to study at Johns Hopkins Carey?
  2. Why is now the right time for you to get your MBA?
  3. What will you do after you get your MBA?
  4. What is your background?
  5. You have to speak to your boss about an overdue promotion, but she is hesitating. Show me how you would negotiate a successful outcome.
  6. What do you think is the future of your field?

7. Tell us about a time you were overloaded with work, how did you handle it?

8. Tell us a time where you had an idea and had to convince your team or manager.

9. Tell me of a time when you demonstrated a high level of drive to achieve a goal.

10. How are you involved with your community?

11. What is the business you most admire and why?

12. Tell me about a time you had to work with a very diverse group.

Conclusion

Well, there you have it, our ultimate list of questions for Johns Hopkins Carey MBA and Masters Kira interview! If you feel we’ve left any out and would like us to update the list please email us: [email protected]

6 common HireVue mistakes

Introduction

Mistakes happen!  Unfortunately, HireVue interviews are very short and a careless mistake when answering questions on your HireVue can have an outsized impact on your chances of landing that dream job.

In this post, the HireVue experts at Voomer break down the 6 most common mistakes.  After you’ve read this, make sure to practice for your HireVue for free at tryvoomer.com and get AI-powered feedback on your performance.

1: Underestimating how strange and unnatural they can be

HireVue interviews are weird!  I remember bumbling through my HireVue quite some time ago and not getting the job.

Taking the time to do some prep before you open that HireVue link pays off handsomely.

It puts you at ease and helps get your mind ready for this very unnatural experience of doing an interview without an interviewer!

2: Getting distracted by your own video

When answering a Hirevue interview, some people get extremely distracted by their own video.

The best way to counter this is to turn off your camera feed in HireVue.  There is a toggle just below your video feed that you can flip to turn the camera off.

Don’t worry, you are still being recorded and your answers registered.

3: Not preparing examples

Some people are great at thinking on the fly, improvising and getting great results – but not everyone!

Take a moment before the interview to write down some of your greatest accomplishments as well as the toughest challenges you’ve faced.

HireVue will ask about certain competencies – with those examples shortlisted you’ll be able to quickly answer anything they throw at you!

6 Common HireVue Mistakes Youtube Video

4: Not using your prep time strategically

One of the few ways in which the HireVue interview is better than a live interview is that you get a couple of seconds to prepare an answer!

So make that prep time count.

Have pen and paper next to you and after you hear the question jot down 3 things:

  1. Context – what was going on
  2. Action – what did you do about that context
  3. Results – what were the results of your actions

With that easy method, you’ll answer any question with ease.

Typing out notes during the prep time can be very distracting – avoid that and just stick to pen and paper.

5: Dragging out your answer

You might be asked a very straightforward question but get lots of time to answer – for example, 3 minutes!

Just because you have all that time available to answer the question, it doesn’t mean you should keep talking on and on just to wind that timer down to zero.

Deliver a clear and concise answer.  After that click on the “submit answer” button and keep going!

6: Not doing any research on the company you are applying to

While most HireVue questions are classic behavioral interview questions, some might require some knowledge about the company you are applying to or its products and services.

Being familiar with the company you are applying to allows you to answer questions with examples that are far more relevant to the hiring team, thus increasing the probability of you getting the job.

Conclusion and next steps

Sadly, many applicants make the above mistakes which as you can see, are easy to avoid.  Follow the tips outlined above and you’ll be ahead of your competition.

Another way to get ahead of the other applicants is to practice.  Voomer is a great platform for that with hundreds of HireVue questions sorted by company and role. You’ll get AI-powered feedback on your answers so you can quickly improve and get that dream job!

Answer any HireVue question

Introduction

HireVue interviews might seem very intimidating at first and many job applicants desperately search around Google for “(company name) HireVue questions” in a futile attempt to find what’s going to be asked and then memorize answers.

Well, I’m here to tell you that is possibly the worst way to prep for a HireVue!

Questions on any companies HireVue are almost always going to follow a very predictable pattern.  Let’s find out how you can decode this pattern and answer any HireVue question.

After reading this article, if you want to practice answering HireVue questions, Voomer is a great free resource.

Step 1 – Research competencies

If you aren’t sure what competencies are, they are the skills and knowledge that you apply to certain situations.

For example, a classic competency many companies want in their hires is customer focus.  Another is thinking with data.  This website lists several competencies in case you want to look at more examples.

The best place to find out what competencies the company you are applying to is interested in, is to visit the organization’s website.  Almost all organizations have an “about us” section.  If you read between the lines you’ll find the competencies they care most about staring you right in the face.

So if a company talks a lot about how they work in a very volatile industry – a competency they will be looking for is adaptability.  If they talk a lot about people and teamwork, you’ll definitively be probed on competencies related to dealing with people – from leadership to training others.

Sometimes, an organization will be really helpful and just flat out mention on the website what are the competencies they are interested in.

To wrap up this first step – write down all the competencies you can identify in the organization you are applying to.

Step 2 – Prepare for behavioral questions

HireVue can’t read the resumes of every person that applies to a job at a given organization and ask personalized questions – they have to standardize.

The way they do that is by asking behavioral questions using the competencies you found out step 1 as a guide!

Even if you don’t know what behavioral questions are – I’m pretty sure you’ve answered a few at some point.

For example, “tell me about a time you had to deal with an angry customer”.  Or “tell me about a time you had to train someone”.

The first question draws on the “customer service” competency and the second one draws on the “enabling others” competency.  See how step 1 was important?

So now we know what type of questions will be asked and the subject of those questions.

An important note about behavioral questions

Before we move onto step 3, notice something about those behavioral questions above: They all ask about your past behavior, require concrete examples and ask about what you did.  Not your supervisor, not your teammate, what you did.

So when shortlisting examples to use when HireVue asks you about a certain competency, make sure to think about concrete examples where you were the person driving the narrative – not someone else.

They don’t care about what your supervisor or teammate did – they are hiring you, not them!

Step 3 – Learn the CAR method

The CAR method is a great way to organize your thoughts when answering any HireVue Question.

“C” stands for “context”.  What was the situation you faced: Did a customer send you an angry email about a missed deliverable?  Did you have an underperforming teammate that affected your work?

Layout that context in a couple of sentences so that HireVue’s AI or the person viewing your video understands the scene.

“A” stands for “action”.  What did you do to solve the issues you laid out in the previous point?  Did you go above and beyond to try and get the customer what they needed?  Did you layout a development plan for that underperforming customer?

Remember, talk about what you did – not anyone else.

“R” stands for “results”.  This is the logical conclusion to the two previous steps.  What happened to the context after you sprang to action?  Did the customer actually get what they needed?  Did your teammate improve?

Remember that if you did not get a stellar result with your actions, you can always talk a bit about the lessons learned, and what you changed in your behavior after going through all that.  This is also very valuable on a HireVue!

Conclusion

If you walk through the 3 steps I outlined above, you’ll be able to confidently answer any HireVue question.

If you want to practice answering those questions on a platform that simulates many aspects of the HireVue experience, you can start for free at Voomer, where you’ll get AI-powered feedback on your answers!
