MIT Sloan MBA video statement guide 2022

Introduction

MIT is pretty unique among MBA programs in the sense that it requires a one minute video submission along with all your other application materials.

In early 2020 I submitted my video submission and got accepted into MIT Sloan.  Watching that video again today makes me cringe – but who cares, it worked!  Today, with that experience behind me and with some hindsight I’ll walk you through how you should go about recording a strong video submission.

What MIT Sloan is looking for

MIT’s motto is “Mens et Manus”, which roughly means “Mind and Hand”.  MIT really lives and breathes that motto and the Sloan School of Management is no exception.  Theoretical or purely academic pursuits are great and all, but what really sets apart MIT is how the students there apply that to the “real” world – thats the “manus” part.

Generally, Sloan wants people in their MBA cohorts that aren’t afraid of going out into the world and getting things done.  They want to see evidence of that in what you’ve done so far and a desire to ramp that up after your MBA.

What to answer on the video submission

While the above should guide the tone of your video, MIT Sloan does not look for submissions that answer a secret question.  They want you to be authentic and in fact welcome creative and memorable messages and settings – as long as they make sense and are not gimmicky.

Below are some suggestions that work well for the video.

  1. Look to your past to explain why you want to get an MBA at Sloan.  Use evidence from your past achievements to forge a compelling story arc that builds towards getting an MBA at Sloan.
  2. Look to the future to explain why you want to get an MBA at Sloan.  Getting an MBA offers many a chance to “reset” their lives and careers and start on a new path, which is probably more compelling to the applicant.  Talk about the amazing things you want to do and how an MBA will empower you to do so.
  3. Talk about how you are unique.  If you have a particularly unique story, make sure to talk about that and bring it to life.  If you are one of the thousands of people with consulting and finance backgrounds but you make artisanal goat cheese in your spare time – talk about that!
  4. Be authentic – admissions has been doing this for much longer than you think.  They know how to detect BS and don’t think very highly of gimmicky props unless they help tell a story as opposed to being the story itself.

Don’t be afraid to mix and match (I touched on all four points in my video!) but make sure the narrative of the whole video makes sense, and is not a disjointed, rushed mess.

Technical considerations

Fortunately, since you’ll record the video on your own time, you can re-record as many times as you like.  That allows you to look at what you’ve recorded and check for technical issues.

Sound – Make sure you can be heard clearly.  If not, think about whether the root cause is the microphone you are using or if you aren’t speaking loud enough.  Admissions has been looking at videos all day, don’t make them strain to listen to your voice!

Lighting – Make sure your face is well lit and if you wear glasses, that there are no reflections bouncing off them.  You want to be memorable in your video, being able to be seen clearly is a big part of that!

No editing, music, etc – Sloan does not want any fancy post-production effects.  The star of the video is you, and only you.  Any gimmicks are interpreted as distractions from what should be the most interesting thing – you.

Don’t read from a script – Reading from a script usually drags down the energy of a delivery, so avoid that.  Jot down bullets of everything you want to say or touch on but talk about those in your own, spur of the moment words.

Conclusion

Many see the MIT Sloan video submission as a pain or are intimidated by it.  My recommendation is to embrace it.  You will not get a better chance to tell your story in such an interesting and compelling way.

Just be authentic and show them what is special about you!

The Ultimate LBS MBA Kira Video Essay Question Bank 2022

Introduction

Everything submitted to the London Business School’s admissions department. Application done. “Oh wait what?! There is some sort of  video requirement?”. Yes, that’s right you’ve just remembered you have to complete a video essay as part of your application to proceed – and you definitely don’t want this to derail your application.

We’ve researched an extensive, but not exhaustive, set of possible questions to help with your preparation – and guess what! All these prompts are all built into Voomer’s AI-powered video assessment tools here.

We recently made a video that goes over some of the things I’m going to discuss in this article.  Take a look at the video but read on for more!

LBS’s style

You need to answer two questions.  The first one is a variation on the “why an MBA and why this school”.  If you are at this stage in your application, you’ll probably already have the answer to that question on the tip of your tongue.  Just make sure to make sure you have something unique that LBS has to offer ready to go on your answer.  LBS admissions isn’t stupid – they know that you’re probably applying to several other programs, but if you can mention something uniquely LBS (a class, professor, club, track, etc), the person reviewing your video essay will definitively pay attention.

OK so here we go! Brace yourself it’s a long list. As you know, there is much more to a strong performance than just being confident in potential questions – structure, performance, eye contact, vocal tone matter too – that’s why we created Voomer to empower you to communicate who you are more effectively.

The Ultimate Kellogg MBA Question Bank for the Kira Video Essay 2022

Introduction

Everything submitted. Application done. “Oh wait what?! There is some sort of  video requirement?”. Yes, that’s right you’ve just remembered you have to complete a video assessment – or video essay, as Kellogg calls it – as part of your application to proceed. You definitely don’t want this to derail your application.

Kellogg’s style

Kellogg is known for trying extending offers to applicants that have a good cultural fit.  Kellogg is located in the greater Chicago area, which in turn is in the US Mid-West.   Midwesterners are known for being very down to earth, genuinely friendly and upbeat.  Keep all that in mind when you answer the questions on Kellogg’s video essay.

OK so here we go! Brace yourself its a long list. As you know, there is much more to a strong performance than just being confident in potential questions – structure, performance, eye contact, vocal tone matter too – that’s why we created Voomer to empower you to communicate who you are more effectively.

2020 Kellogg Kira Video Essay Question Bank

How has this unprecedented year challenged you and how have you faced that challenge?

That’s it?  Yes it appears so!  This year Kellogg has eschewed their usual question bank and will ask applicants to answer those three questions.

However, if we take a look at the question bank from past years, we can see what I mentioned above – Kellogg is really looking for an applicant’s cultural fit, what attitudes they have to life, etc.  Overly bragging, boasting and exaggerating probably won’t get you very far.

The Ultimate Boston University Questrom MBA Kira Video Question Bank 2022

Introduction

You just submitted your application for BU’s Questrom School of Business MBA or one their many MS/masters or online programs – great!

However, there’s one more step!  Now you have to submit a video essay (sometimes called a video interview) run by Kira Talent.  Keep in mind that it is on that submissions that admissions will actually hear you talk for the first time, and first impressions matter!

That’s why we’ve compiled a list of questions that have come up on Boston University’s (BU) Questrom School of Business MBA interviews.

After reading this article, make sure you check out Voomer, where you can practice and get AI-powered feedback on your answers.

BU Questrom’s style

Before we dive into the questions, its worthwhile taking a look at BU Questrom’s style.  Business schools have their own personalities, and if you really want to get into Questrom, understanding that is essential.

Questrom’s culture is relatively different from the rest of BU for one main reasons.  BU’s campus is very spread out around Boston, so there isn’t that much mingling with students not studying business (though you can easily find and mingle with them if you set out to do that).

Besides the usual platitudes you’ll hear from admissions on how great Questrom is, one thing in particular that places Questrom in the top MBA’s in the US is how geographically diverse the student body is.  The vast majority are from outside the state and around 1/4 are from outside the US.  So when answering the video essay, make sure to play up your cosmopolitan credentials, how you’ve  dealt with teammates from different cultures, if you are interested in learning about other cultures, etc.  Admissions will be looking for this!

Now that you understand what BU Questrom is looking for, lets take a look at some questions that have been asked in the past on the video essay or video interview:

BU Questrom MBA Kira Video Essay Question Bank

Motivation questions:

1. Why an MBA now?
2. Why Boston University?  Why Questrom?
3. How long have you been considering doing an MBA and why now is the right time?
4. What specific skills are you looking to gain at Questrom?
5. What is unique to the MBA at Questrom that attracts you?

Competency questions:

1. What is the most significant personal weakness that you have identified, what did you do about it and what was the result?
2. Imagine you are proposing a business innovation idea for a class project and the audience is not interested. What would you do?
3. Discuss what you would do if you and your teammates cannot come to an agreement on a project decision.
4. If you could have any job in the world, what would it be?
5. What is the most interesting or innovative thing you own?  How would you improve it?

Conclusion

Go over those questions for the Questrom MBA or MS programs in your head, but make sure to practice them as you would on the actual Kira video essay or interview.  Voomer is a great tool to help you practice since those questions and more are loaded into our system and you can practice in an environment that is nearly identical to the one you’ll face on the actual interview.

How to answer the INSEAD MBA video interview questions

Introduction

INSEAD’s video essay has been around for a few years now and is an integral part of admission’s assessment of each candidate.  Read on to understand what INSEAD’s style is so you can get into that dream MBA.  Remember to practice your answers to the video essay and interview on a platform like Voomer.

We recently made a video that goes over some of the things I’m going to discuss in this article.  Take a look at the video but read on for more!

Style guide

INSEAD is an interesting outlier in a sea of US business schools and so is their culture.  Being aware of its culture and setting up your answers to the video interview questions to match that culture is key to improve your chances of getting admitted.

  1. Geographic diversity is celebrated at INSEAD.  If you have personal experiences outside of your home country or you have multiple home countries, make sure to mention that in one of your responses.

2. If you’ve worked in a country that is not your home country, that also helps a lot with your case.  So make sure to try and bring that up.

3. INSEAD likes candidates that think outside the box.  When answering your video interview questions, mention any situation in which you had to figure out the solution to a problem through an unconventional way.

Questions

You’ll have to answer three questions drawn randomly from a question bank.  You have 45 seconds to prepare and 60 seconds to answer.

Your question bank sample is on the way! You can practice live now at https://tryvoomer.com!
We’ve not been able to send you a Question Bank, but at Voomer you can start practicing with these questions now.

Most of the questions are behavioral, which means you have to draw from your past experiences and reply following the CAR structure.  I’ve written extensively about behavioral interview techniques here.

Conclusion

Stay humble, show admissions you did your research, and try and highlight the occasions where teamwork was key to your success.  That is what the INSEAD MBA admissions team is looking for in the video essay and video interview responses.

The other extremely important thing is to practice.  Answering these questions as best you can takes mental organization and preparation.

Use a platform like Voomer to prep for the essay and interview.  They use the same question bank as INSEAD admissions does and have AI-powered analysis tools that evaluate your responses so you can improve quickly.

How to answer the LBS MBA video essay questions

Introduction

LBS’s video essay has been around for a few years now and is an integral part of admission’s assessment of each candidate.  Read on to understand what LBS’s style is so you can get into that dream MBA.  Remember to practice your answers to the video essay and interview on a platform like Voomer.

Style guide

LBS has ranked consistently at the top of MBA rankings and that is in part due to its strong, vibrant culture.  Being aware of its culture when answering your video interview questions is key to a strong application.

  1. LBS is traditionally seen as a program focused on finance.  Though LBS obviously excels in other areas, if you have solid experience in finance or plan to take your next steps after graduation in finance, make sure to bring that up in one of your answers.
  2. The program tries to foster a strong sense of teamwork among the students.  That even comes through in the requirements for their application.  Bring up any particularly noteworthy team building experience in your responses.
  3. LBS makes a concentrated effort to be a global business school with global appeal.  If you have international work experience, you have to figure out a way to sneak that into one of your answers.

Your question bank sample is on the way! You can practice live now at https://tryvoomer.com!
We’ve not been able to send you a Question Bank, but at Voomer you can start practicing with these questions now.

Questions

LBS requires you to answer only two questions rather than the usual three that most other MBA programs require.

The first one is usually a variation on the usual “why do you want an MBA and why at LBS?” that you will see essentially at every MBA program you apply to.

The second one focuses a lot more on behavioral questions which I have written extensively about here.  For the likely questions that will be asked in the second question, you can take a look at another recent blog post of mine which contains many of the recently asked questions.

Conclusion

Stay humble, show admissions you did your research and try and highlight the occasions where teamwork was key to your success.  That is what the LBS MBA admissions team is looking for in the video essay and video interview responses.

The other extremely important thing is to practice.  Answering these questions as best you can takes some mental organization and preparation.

Use a platform like Voomer to prep for the essay and interview.  They use the same question bank as LBS admissions does and have AI-powered analysis tools that evaluate your responses so you can improve quickly.

How to answer the Kellogg MBA video essay questions

Introduction

Kellogg’s video essay has been around for a few years now and is an integral part of admission’s assessment of each candidate.  Read on to understand what Kellogg’s style is so you can get into that dream MBA.  Remember to practice your answers to the video essay and interview on a platform like Voomer.

Style guide

Kellogg is known for having a very particular culture.  Some say it’s due to its midwestern setting, others say it is due to the collaborative nature of study there.  Regardless of what the origins are, it is important to understand it so you can ace the video interview.

  1. Be down to earth and avoid showing off in your responses.  Kellogg is known for being a very unassuming place.
  2. Try and emphasize teamwork in your answers.  Kellogg pioneered the emphasis of teamwork in higher business education almost half a century ago.  That culture is still alive and kicking today.
  3. Show how you will contribute.  Kellogg has an extraordinarily strong student participation culture and admissions expects to see that drive to help and contribute in its applicants.
If you are a marketer (or a budding marketer), make sure that comes through in your answers.  Kellogg is frequently thought of as “the” marketing business school due to the tenure of some marketing luminaries such as Philip Kotler.

We’ve not been able to send you a Question Bank, but at Voomer you can start practicing with these questions now.

Questions

Normally Kellogg has a relatively large question bank and the questions you’ll be asked are drawn from that. However, due to the extraordinary events of 2020, Kellogg has changed their format slightly and will ask the same three questions to all applicants:

  1. Please introduce yourself to the admissions committee.

2. What path are you interested in pursuing, how will you get there, and why is this program right for you?

3. 2020 has been a year of seismic disruption — fighting the global COVID-19 pandemic, tragic deaths that have brought systemic racism and social justice issues to the forefront of long overdue conversations, and economic and political divides that are growing deeper and deeper. How has this unprecedented year challenged you and how have you faced that challenge?

Conclusion

Stay humble, show admissions you did your research and try and highlight the occasions where teamwork was key to your success.  That is what the Kellogg MBA admissions team is looking for in the video essay and video interview responses.

Kellogg MBA Video Essay Prep

Background

The Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University is a pioneer in the use of video as part of the application process at their prestigious MBA program.

Kellogg made video a part of the admissions process back in 2013 and sources indicate that the relative importance of a candidate’s video essay has increased over time.  Therefore, prepping thoroughly for Kellogg’s MBA video essay is a key part of a successful applicant’s journey to admission.

Admissions staff at Kellogg value the video essay greatly since it allows them to get a better feel for who they are, in an environment that is not as staged as an essay (which some candidates even outright hire ghostwriters to pen them a perfect essay) or relentlessly drill for as the face to face interview.

We recently made a video that goes over some of the things I’m going to discuss in this article.  Take a look at the video but read on for more!

What to expect

Questions on the video interview tend to mix up classic MBA application questions (for example, “why do you want an MBA from Kellogg”, “what is your greatest achievement”, etc) with questions that would probably never make it to a formal face to face interview, such as “what is your favorite food?”.  This gives credence to what admissions has publicly stated as the purpose of the video interview – to simply get to know the applicant.

MBA Video Interviews are becoming increasingly important, but finding the right setting can be a challenge.

Recording the Kellogg video essay is a relatively straightforward process.  The interview is run on a platform managed by a company called Kira Talent.  You have to answer three questions.  Those questions are delivered in the form of a video recording, one at a time.  After hearing each question, the applicant has 20 seconds to prepare an answer and 60 seconds to respond.  There are no retries!

2020 Kellogg video essay questions

In the past, questions have been randomly drawn from a question bank.  However, due to the extraordinary events of 2020, Kellogg has changed their format slightly.

The first question asks you to introduce yourself to the admissions committee.

The second question asks about your interests and why Kellogg is the right program for you.

The third question is more complex and brings up the topics of the COVID-19 pandemic, racial issues becoming part of day to day discourse and deepening political divides.  Then the applicant is asked to explain how these issues have affected them and how the applicant has faced those challenges.

To be absolutely clear: You only have one chance to record those answers!  There are no retries!  Once you’ve recorded your answer there is no way you can record again.  The only exception is if there is a legitimate technical issue and the Kira staff verify that video was not captured or there was some other sort of problem.  If you ask Kellogg admissions to redo the video interview without a valid technical reason, your application will probably be flagged and not in a good way.

How to prepare for the video essay

A good way to avoid stressing out due to technical issues is testing the Kira platform before you start answering the Kellogg questions.  Kira has a helpful section on their website that explains in great details the technical step-by-step of recording video and what to do in case there are any technical issues.

Another big thing to look out for when preparing for the video interview is how unnatural it is to record yourself talking into your camera.  Everyone does selfie videos but this is quite a different experience!

Make sure you do lots of practice runs to familiarize yourself with recording video without anybody else on the other end.

Your question bank sample is on the way! You can practice live now at https://tryvoomer.com!
We’ve not been able to send you a Question Bank, but at Voomer you can start practicing with these questions now.

Get ahead of the competition

Voomer is a great way to get that practice since it was built from the ground up with this scenario in mind.  When it comes to doing well on interviews, there is only one way to improve and get ahead of the competition – practice, practice and more practice.

Questions on Voomer match what you’ll get on the Kellogg video essay and after going through a set of questions, you’ll get an artificial intelligence powered report on your results with specific, actionable steps you can take to improve your performance.

Your response is broken down into multiple components and analyzed individually and then as a whole.  From delivery to content to body language and camera settings.
