I’m going to introduce you to 3 hand gestures that, although you may feel strange doing, to an interviewer will communicate that you are an enthusiastic, talented, confident individual ready to take on a career in their company.
These 3 simple hand gestures will increase the dynamism of your presentation, help you stay focused and ready to face the awkwardness of any video interview head on.
If you’ve ever struggled in a video interview, it is even harder to get clear feedback than a regular interview. It is difficult to know why you can’t get through – but you know throughout the interview you need to perform confidently, engagingly and convincingly.
So here we go! The 3 simple hand gestures to be more dynamic in your video interview:
#3 On the one hand, on the other
On the one hand, on the other is one of those immersive hand gestures that takes the viewer along with you, providing a clear and coherent structure. It is best deployed when trying to present different options to choose from – or different viewpoints that you are expressing in an answer.
On the one hand we needed to build a team that could be productive together, but on the other hand we also wanted to encourage each member of the team to contribute their own individual skills to the project.
#2 From the ground up
Progression, innovation and building momentum are the thoughts that come to mind when you use this hand gesture in conjunction with the phrase “from the ground up”. Executing this with a pause and the right tone will surely add confidence to your answer. While most hand gestures can be used in a variety of situations this one is more particular. Used rarely, but at the right tim e this move can blow the interviewer away.
#1 Firstly, Secondly, Thirdly.
This is a great way to explicitly connect with the interviewer by setting expectations and a well defined structure up front. As an interviewer you see a well informed confident individual able to take control of a situation and clearly communicate a solution.
“I’m going to tell you about three reasons why using hand gestures will make you a more compelling candidate. Number 1: Using your whole body on a video call enables you to communicate with enthusiasm. Number 2: The energy you put into your movement on the call is seen and felt by the interviewer as excitement and passion. Number 3: providing a visual structure reinforces the narrative structure of your response.”
Now you have 3 simple hand gestures to make your confidence and enthusiasm shine in the video interview. When you are invited to do a remote interview you will no longer be worried that you are struggling to use everything at your disposal.
OK so you may find that using gestures on video calls doesn’t come naturally to you. Well if you make gesturing a natural part of your day-to-day routine it will start to feel more and more natural – practice makes perfect.
If you are ordering an iced coffee at Starbucks, tell the barista that you only want a little ice – and accompany it with a loud and proud gesture communicating the same concept. You may even start to notice you are more energetic throughout your day and get more positive engaged responses overall!
