Congratulations on getting an invitation to a NYU Stern interview!
The MBA from Stern is consistently ranked as one of the best in the US, so though your test scores, grades, essays and letters of recommendation have gotten you this far, it pays not to be complacent and prep for the interview as intensely as you prepped for everything else so far.

We recently made a video that goes over some of the things I’m going to discuss in this article. Take a look at the video but read on for more!
The NYU Stern interview format
Stern uses its own admissions team to interview applicants. Normally, it is best to interview at the New York campus if you can, but given the current COVID-19 crisis, interviews are being done through Zoom/Skype.
Interviews are usually friendly and the admissions staff that will interview you will have read through your entire application. Questions will be split into three broad categories. Firstly, classic MBA interview-type questions (for example, “why do you want to get an MBA?”). Secondly, probing questions that seek to shine some light on issues that admissions staff might have picked up on your written application. And last but not least, behavioral questions – these are such a staple of MBA interviews that I have written an extensive article on how to deal with behavioral questions here.
NYU Stern MBA interview sample question list
1. Why an MBA now?
2. Why NYU Stern?
3. How long have you been considering doing an MBA and why now is the right time?
4. What specific skills are you looking to gain at NYU Stern?
5. What is unique to NYU Stern that you are attracted to?
6. How will your contribute to NYU Stern?
7. What are your career goals?
8. What is your leadership style?
9. How would your manager describe you?
10. How would your colleagues describe you?
11. What was the hardest challenge you faced?
12. Tell me about yourself.
Even though NYU Stern does not stray too far from the norm when it comes to its MBA interviews, it pays to practice – and practice a lot. Ultimately, it is repetition that will make you feel more at ease with the format, the questions and answering them in a clear, concise and convincing way.
